Attention all animal lovers and humans worldwide! Animal abusers involved in the barbaric activity of dog fighting will now face tougher sentences for their crimes.

On April 15, the U.S. Sentencing Commission voted unanimously to increase the federal sentencing guidelines for animal fighting offenses. They have amended the minimum sentence from 6 to 12 months to a more severe penalty of 21 to 27 months of jail time across all U.S. states.

This is a huge win for dogs and animals involved in the vicious and cruel activity of dogfighting.

Over 50,000 letters from the public

In a news release, the Commission announced that the changes came about “in response to Congressional changes to the Animal Welfare Act, the Commission’s own research and analysis, and nearly 50,000 citizen letters”.

So it’s thanks to you humans that these violent criminals will be behind bars for longer!

#GetTough campaign

The victims in dog fighting circles are bred, tortured and killed for profit. The dogs are forced to fight each other, often until death, or used as bait to encourage them to be aggressive.

The ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) have long been fighting to toughen the sentencing for these violent criminals, using the hashtag campaign #GetTough.

On hearing the welcome news, Tim Rickey, vice president of ASPCA Field Investigations and Response, commended the new amendment in a press release:

These new guidelines will go a long way to protect hundreds of thousands of dogs in the United States who are forced to fight and suffer each year purely for the entertainment and financial gain of their owners.

Indeed, dogfighting is a depraved and inhumane activity. So on behalf of all of the dogs who are victimised by animal fighters every year, thank you for making sure the punishment now better fits the crime.
