After a year of sadness, there is hope for the polar bear named Pizza. Pizza is the star attraction at Grandview Aquarium located in a mall in Guangzhou, China.
Earlier this year, Animals Asia visited the zoo and found that many of the zoo’s animals were living in tiny concrete cells with no sunlight or enrichment. Also living at the zoo were some Arctic foxes, wolves, a whale shark, walruses, and beluga whales.
None of the animals were thriving. Pizza’s plight caught the attention of many people. He lived in a room no sun and only a tiny pool for swimming.
The video sparked outrage, and a petition was started calling for Pizza to be released. The petition quickly earned more than 500,000 signatures.
Grandview officials refused to budge. A facility in Doncaster, England called Yorkshire Wildlife Park has offered Pizza a new home. The park has a polar bear habitat with 2 lakes and 10 acres of land.
David Neale, an animal welfare director for Animals Asia, said that Grandview can make things right and the animals can have a happy ending.
Animals Asia is hoping that with continued social pressure Grandview will agree to release Pizza. You can sign the petition or donate to Animals Asia to help other animals like Pizza.
