Many dog owners probably have little to no doubt that their dogs would offer their lives in order to save a loved one. This courageous dog has proven this to be real, passing away as a hero by giving up his own life to protect his family’s 8-month-old baby.
Pup Polo and baby Viviana had been inside of their house when mom Erika Poremski went outside to her car. At that moment, flames started to engulf their home. The distressed mom hurried towards the door to get her daughter out of danger, but the fire was already raging.
“I tried to keep getting in,” Poremski shared with CBS News. “She was up the stairs, but the fire smoke was so heavy I couldn’t get past it.”
As she was struggling to push her way into their home, her face and hands got burned.
Firefighters showed up on the scene, and when they were inside, they found baby Viviana alive because Polo had covered her with his body. Unfortunately, the dog wasn’t able to survive the tragedy.
Baby Viviana sustained burns on her arms and side, and her condition is still regarded as severe. Nevertheless, she is alive and has hope because Polo made the greatest sacrifice.
“That day of the fire, he was acting weird all day. I even told a friend I was going to take him to vet. He was crying and following me around and had a seizure from anxiety,” Poremski told the CBS.
The heroic dog Polo will be greatly missed by his family.
“He was my first baby before Viv. He was like my child. He followed us everywhere,” she shared with CBS.
A GoFundMe page was also set up to assist the family to pay for Viviana’s medical expenses and to recover a number of the possessions they’ve lost in that traumatic event. At this point, around $30,000 has been raised on a $50,000 objective.
We all wish the very best for Erika and Viviana throughout this tough time. And to the wonderful hero, Polo, may you rest in peace. You are definitely a hero whose name will never be forgotten.
