Nine-year-old Elysia was playing near a creek in the backyard of her home in northwest Indiana. It was late in the morning and temperatures were rising near 90 °F. That’s when Elysia spotted something strange in the thick, green grass. “I just saw pink legs kicking away,” she told NBC Chicago.
At first, Elysia thought it was some sort of robotic doll, but she quickly realized it was moving like a human. “I knew it was alive and I knew we had something,” she said. “I could not second-guess myself.”
Elysia alerted her mom, Heidi, who ran outside and confirmed the unthinkable truth — that Elysia had just discovered a newborn baby girl. She was crying and naked, and her skin was being burnt by the hot sun. There were also maggots on the placenta and umbilical cord which were also lying in the grass. This poor abandoned baby, who was born just a few hours before Elysia found her there, was wrapped in a towel with no mother in sight.
Heidi plucked the baby girl up from the grass and told Elysia to call 911 immediately.
